JEFFERSON CITY聽鈥 The state is making a $750,000 pool of money available to pay people helping clean up the wreckage from the May 16 tornado.聽
The 蜜柚直播 Department of Higher Education and Workforce Development said the money will fund temporary wages for people helping with recovery efforts from the tornado that tore through St. Louis, damaging hundreds of buildings and killing five.
鈥淭hese communities need immediate support as they continue to navigate cleanup and recovery efforts,鈥澛燡ulie Carter, director of the office of workforce development, said in a statement Thursday. 鈥淲e also have 蜜柚直播ans looking for opportunities to earn a wage while they get back on their feet. These funds will help supplement relief efforts and provide much-needed support to those in need while 蜜柚直播 awaits additional federal assistance.鈥

Funds will be available in St. Louis, St. Louis County and six impacted counties in Southeast 蜜柚直播. The state is working on the initiative with local workforce development boards, including the St. Louis Agency on Training and Employment (SLATE), and local organizations, such as the Urban League. Workers must be unemployed to qualify, but their unemployment does not have to be related to the tornado.
State officials said cleanup opportunities through the program will begin June 1.
